Vigil@nce - Xen: privilege escalation via I/O Port Access

May 2016 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can perform input/output operations on Xen with
Linux x86-64, in order to escalate his privileges, or to obtain
sensitive data.

Impacted products: Fedora, Linux, Ubuntu.

Severity: 2/4.

Creation date: 17/03/2016.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Xen product can be incorporated with Linux x86-64.

However, in this case, the IRET (interrupted return) and POPF (pop
flags) instructions do not update the flag EFLAGS.IOPL (I/O
Privilege Level).

A local attacker can therefore perform input/output operations on
Xen with Linux x86-64, in order to escalate his privileges, or to
obtain sensitive data.
