Vigil@nce - Xen: denial of service via libxl PV bootloader
December 2015 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can request, to the same process linked to libxl,
several domains with a PV bootloader to be started, in order to
trigger a denial of service.
Impacted products: Fedora, Xen.
Severity: 1/4.
Creation date: 08/12/2015.
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
A toolstack based on libxl can manage several domains in the same
process (such as libvirt). Moreover, a domain can be configured to
use a PV Bootloader (such as pygrub).
However, in this special configuration, if an error occurs when
the domain starts, the memory and files associated to the process
linked to libxl are not freed.
An attacker can therefore request, to the same process linked to
libxl, several domains with a PV bootloader to be started, in
order to trigger a denial of service.
