Vigil@nce - PHP: double free via IMAP
November 2010 by Vigil@nce
This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/
SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY
An attacker can force a double memory free in the IMAP extension
of PHP, in order to create a denial of service or possibly to
execute code.
Severity: 2/4
Creation date: 19/11/2010
DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY
The IMAP extension of PHP is used by applications connecting to an
IMAP server.
The PHP imap_open() function opens a session. It calls the C
php_imap_do_open() function. This function frees the memory area
containing the login and the password. However, both pointers are
then freed again later in other functions of the IMAP extension.
An attacker can therefore force a double memory free in the IMAP
extension of PHP, in order to create a denial of service or
possibly to execute code.
