Vigil@nce - OpenBSD: denial of service via unaligned memory access

October 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can used an OpenBSD program using unaligned
addresses, in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: OpenBSD

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 20/10/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The exec system call of OpenBSD is used to start running a new
program.

The executable file includes an header that states the addresses
and sizes of the code area and the data one. The processor
requires that addresses are aligned. However, a attacker can
create a file header with unaligned addresses in order to trigger
an alignment exception in the kernel, which leads to a kernel
panic.

A local attacker can therefore used an OpenBSD program using
unaligned addresses, in order to trigger a denial of service.
