Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: denial of service via S/390 Linkage Stack

February 2014 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can use the S/390 Linkage Stack, in order to
trigger a denial of service of the Linux kernel.

Impacted products: Linux

Severity: 1/4

Creation date: 21/02/2014

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel can be installed on S/390 processors.

The Linkage Stack is a shared memory area where processes can
store information during a state change.

However, if the process uses a low memory address, the kernel
panics.

A local attacker can therefore use the S/390 Linkage Stack, in
order to trigger a denial of service of the Linux kernel.
