Vigil@nce - Linux kernel: NULL pointer dereference via inet_autobind

December 2015 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : http://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

A local attacker can force a NULL pointer to be dereferenced in
the inet_autobind() function of the Linux kernel, in order to
trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Debian, Fedora, Linux.

Severity: 1/4.

Creation date: 14/12/2015.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Linux kernel supports low level sockets of type SOCK_RAW.

However, using a SOCK_RAW socket, of AF_INET6 (IPv6) family, with
an invalid protocol, forces the inet_autobind() function to use an
NULL function pointer.

A local attacker can therefore force a NULL pointer to be
dereferenced in the inet_autobind() function of the Linux kernel,
in order to trigger a denial of service.
