Vigil@nce - Cisco Nexus: denial of service via Cisco Discovery Protocol

September 2016 by Vigil@nce

This bulletin was written by Vigil@nce : https://vigilance.fr/offer

SYNTHESIS OF THE VULNERABILITY

An unauthenticated attacker can craft and send a malicious CDP
packet to Cisco Nexus, in order to trigger a denial of service.

Impacted products: Nexus by Cisco, NX-OS.
 Severity: 2/4.
 Creation date: 28/07/2016.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VULNERABILITY

The Cisco Nexus uses Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP).

However, an insufficient input validation of CDP packets can
generate an out-of-bound memory access, and crashes the server.

An unauthenticated attacker can therefore craft and send a
malicious CDP packet to Cisco Nexus, in order to trigger a denial
of service.
