Telia Finland Selects HI-FOG® High-Pressure Water Mist Fire Protection for the Largest Open Data Center in Finland

April 2017 by Marc Jacob

Marioff has been awarded a new contract with Telia Finland to provide HI-FOG high-pressure water mist fire protection for the largest open data center being built in Helsinki, Finland. The entire building will be protected by the HI-FOG system, with the contract including 3-D system design, engineering, project management, materials, commissioning and annual maintenance for two years. Marioff, a leading developer of water mist fire protection technology, is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The new open data center, which is interoperable with other open data centers, will be the most modern and energy-efficient data center in Finland, providing information and communications technology infrastructure services for both Finnish and international companies. The total building area will be 33,500 square meters, including 15,000 square meters of data halls that house up to 5,000 server racks and 200,000 servers. The maximum capacity of the data center will be 24 megawatts and will generate around 200,000 megawatt hours of heat energy every year, which will warm 9,000 houses with recovered heat.

“Marioff’s expertise and experience in the data center environment as well as the benefits of HI-FOG’s low water usage and localized suppression made it an easy choice for us,” said Timo Puroviita, production manager, Telia Finland.
“We are proud and extremely excited that Marioff has been chosen as the fire protection supplier for this significant data center and are committed to meet the requirements that Telia has placed on us,” said Jaakko Kääriäinen, business unit manager, Marioff Finland.

The HI-FOG system is powered by the new HI-FOG Electric Pump Unit, known for its reliability, embedded control system and accurate pressure and flow. The system’s low water usage and localized suppression help reduce equipment damage and downtime in a fire event. The HI-FOG system is the first high-pressure water mist system that has been certified by FM Approvals for protecting data processing equipment halls and cable trays below raised floors. The HI-FOG system also functions safely in ventilated conditions and narrow spaces under the raised floor of a data hall, and is equipped with a pre-action security mechanism, which helps to prevent accidental water leakages and false discharges.

The data center is estimated to be completed at the end of 2017.
