TelecityGroup sign EU Code of Conduct for data centres and joins the Green Grid

February 2009 by Marc Jacob

TelecityGroup, the pan-European premium data centre provider, announced it will be the first network independent provider to sign up to the recent EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres.

The EU Code of Conduct is a European-wide voluntary initiative, developed in collaboration with the industry, which promotes energy efficiency performance standards for data centres. Signatories are expected to implement the Code’s best practice - for example, decommission old servers, reduce the amount of air conditioning used or maximise server usage by running multiple applications – and will be assessed on an annual report of energy consumption. The Code’s best practices have already been implemented to the Group’s Amsterdam data centres, and will now be rolled out across the Group.

At the same time, the company today announced its membership with The Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems. The Green Grid seeks to provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices, metrics and technologies that will improve overall data centre and business computing energy efficiencies. By joining The Green Grid, TelecityGroup is helping influence both developers and end users to adopt the best practices and standards in technologies and designs of the datacenters to improve infrastructure efficiency and reduce energy costs.

TelecityGroup, a Green oriented company

TelecityGroup is a long time committed company to environmental stewardship. The group is always investing to improve the design, build and efficiency of data centre infrastructure to reduce operational expenditure while ensuring the optimum performance of customer equipment. TelecityGroup engineers have deployed highly innovative data centre designs, technologies and services across its facilities which significantly reduce the power and cooling requirements. These designs have created considerable savings for TelecityGroup and its customers by reducing energy consumption, helping to cut data centre carbon emissions in the process.

In addition, many TelecityGroup’s datacenters use renewable sources of energy. For example, TelecityGroup France joined recently EDF’s “Equilibre +” offer. EDF’s “Equilibre+” offer certifies that the equivalent of 21% of the electricity consumed by TelecityGroup France has been generated from renewable sources of energy and guarantees a neutral impact in terms of C02 emissions. TelecityGroup France is also participating economically to a project around solar power.

Michael Tobin, CEO of TelecityGroup, states: “Efficiency has always been at the core of our business, and I therefore welcome the EU Code of Conduct because it provides sensible, practical and applicable guidelines to other businesses who wish to minimise the environmental impact of their data centres. By becoming one of the first signatories and joining the Green Grid, TelecityGroup is again demonstrating its commitment to best practice and its leadership in the industry.”
