Sophos: Managed appliances boost security and simplify email policy enforcement

November 2007 by Marc Jacob

IT security and control firm Sophos has announced that its two email appliances, the ES1000 and ES4000, now enable organisations to prevent the leakage of confidential information via email. In addition to blocking email-borne malware, potentially unwanted applications and spam from entering the corporate network via the email gateway, these new Sophos email appliances now enable businesses to scan outbound messages for sensitive data and use encryption to ensure the secure transit of business critical emails.

New management controls included in the Sophos email appliances allow IT administrators to set and monitor user- and group-specific policies that prevent emails containing pre-defined keywords or strings of words from reaching unauthorised recipients, both within and outside of the organisation. The appliances can also identify and block confidential attachments, including those that have had their file type disguised by the sender. These features, together with TLS encryption, help organisations comply with the raft of legal and regulatory requirements that govern the security of confidential information. In addition, they also help ensure that a business’s online commercial assets remain secure.

The ES1000 and ES4000 email appliances also meet the growing demand for simpler security solutions. All appliance features, as well as email traffic and other inline systems, are automatically monitored to ensure the entire email infrastructure’s availability and performance. Appliances can be managed in-house or IT administrators can opt for Sophos to monitor their infrastructures, using its comprehensive remote management capabilities.

Supported by SophosLabs, Sophos’s global network of threat analysis centres, updates for the Sophos email appliances are available as frequently as every five minutes. This provides businesses with the peace of mind that the latest anti-malware and anti-spam protection is always in place. Sophos’s Behavioral Genotype Protection also allows for superior proactive blocking of new and unknown threats.

The ES4000, which is ideal for mid-to large sized organisations, and the ES1000, which is suitable for small- to medium-size firms, both contain an easy-to-use Wizard-based policy tool that enables IT administrators to set inbound and outbound rules which are in full accordance with the organisation’s established acceptable use of email policy. Sophos’s ’three clicks to anywhere’ web-based console further streamlines management, by displaying the status of the system, including mail flow, software and threat updates, and also offers rapid access to other management functions. In addition, message tracking provides a complete overview of message movement through logs, queues and quarantine.

US-based Virginia Mason Medical Center is using the new Sophos appliance to help protect against confidential data loss.
