“These are devastating ransomware attacks, potentially impacting the lives and livelihoods of many, many people. 8 in 10 ransomware attacks begin with phishing, and while we’re still waiting on specifics to come to light, we can be fairly confident that these originated with email spear-phishing. These attacks come on the heels of the Google Doc phishing attacks and reinforce once again that current email security solutions are not working. The attackers are too smart, too patient and too determined. Organisations need to put more emphasis into their security beyond that of the ISP/gateway or through employee awareness. We must do better as an industry to quickly detect, mitigate and remediate email phishing attacks if we are to have any hope of getting the ransomware epidemic under control.”
