Proofpoint is releasing its Quarterly Threat Report which explores threats

November 2015 by Marc Jacob

Proofpoint is releasing its Quarterly Threat Report which explores threats, trends, and transformations seen within the threat landscape throughout July – September 2015., trends

Key Findings from the Report:

• The EU generates the most spam globally – accounting for 25.75 percent. Germany generates the most spam in the EU – accounting for 3.20 percent. The U.S. is still the worst country overall – accounting for 11.46% of the global total.

• Actors behind highly targeted attacks continue to use email as their preferred vector, but social media continues to becoming increasingly important. For example, we have recently seen cybercriminals taking serious advantage of social media customer service inquiries via Twitter.

• Campaigns distributing the Dridex banking Trojan dwarfed other malware payloads in volume, and continued to innovate with attachment formats, document templates, obfuscation and infection techniques.

• While there were reported Dridex takedown efforts in the past quarter—it hasn’t led to significant longer-term decreases in activity. The early September arrest of a member of the group behind Dridex resulted in a pause in Dridex activity, but the speed with which activity subsequently resumed, and then changed payloads, provided a striking demonstration of the resilience and adaptability of threat actors.

• Angler dominates the exploit kit landscape, with only four others (Neutrino, Nuclear, Magnitude, and RIG) accounting for most of the rest of the EK activity.
