NordVPN Offers Free Emergency VPN Service as Turkey Blocks Wikipedia

April 2017 by Marc Jacob

Over the weekend, Turkey has blocked Wikipedia, based on a national
law that allows to ban websites “for the protection of public order, national
security or the wellbeing of the public.”

The move to ban a popular website comes after numerous cases of other freedom of
speech violations in Turkey, where social media sites have been banned during the
times of political turmoil.

The latest developments will most likely send alarm to the rights groups protecting
freedom of speech. Wikipedia founder Jimmy said on Twitter that “access to
information is a fundamental human right.”

NordVPN, one of the most secure VPN service providers in the world, offers a
solution to bypass freedom of speech restrictions in Turkey. Using a VPN service can
help you access Wikipedia and the other websites that might be blocked in the
future.

How to unblock Wikipedia and other sites

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN service links users computer to a
server in a country of their choice via encrypted tunnel – for example, a person
can appear to be in the U.S., while they actually are in Turkey, and vice versa,
simply by choosing a different VPN server location. A VPN service like NordVPN would
allow you to substitute your current IP address with the IP address of Sweden, for
example, so you can connect to Wikipedia as if you were in Sweden.

A VPN encrypts your data through a secure tunnel before accessing the internet - this protects any sensitive information about your location by hiding your IP
address.

NordVPN does not keep any logs and uses very powerful encryption to route its
users’ online data. This way users can protect themselves from data tracking or
cyber attacks and maintain their anonymity on the internet whether they’re using a
PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet, gaming consoles or any other device that requires an
internet connection.
