M86 Security Recognized by SC Magazine as Industry Innovator for Second Year in a Row

December 2011 by Marc Jacob

M86 Security, the global expert in real-time Web and email threat protection, has again been recognized in the Innovators 2011 special section of SC Magazine’s December issue. The annual report looks at those companies setting benchmarks in their respective product areas. This year M86 Security is being recognized in the Perimeter Defense category and was singled out for its “technological know-how, experience and creative problem solving.”

The M86 Secure Web Gateway (SWG) was recognized for “a comprehensive defense gateway with the ability to work with associated products to protect the internal network from the perimeter.” The SC Magazine report notes that, “We had the opportunity to give the product a thorough shake-down, and the results were impressive…M86 focuses on distinct capabilities that are holistic, rather than any one single capability." They go on to say that “malware defines the M86 product. And the malware engine defines its innovation.”

"Cybercriminals are becoming ever more sophisticated in their targeted attacks. Some of the techniques being employed include: exploiting current security technologies with stolen digital certificates, infecting legitimate websites, embedding malicious code within innocent files, exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities and launching other multi-stage attacks to infiltrate government agencies and organizations to extract information or cause disruption,” says John Vigouroux, Chief Executive Officer, M86 Security. "We are continually improving our patented, anti-malware protection technologies to help protect organizations against increasingly complex – and often public – cyber-attacks, and are honored by SC Magazine’s continued recognition of this innovation.”

SC Magazine editors note that the perimeter has become more and more indistinct and that many organizations are uncertain why they need perimeter defense when the real concern is data leakage. “It would be good if [perimeter defense devices] could work hand-in-glove with a data leakage product so that interdiction of malware phoning home with a payload could become a defense-in-depth proposition,” the editors write. The editors also note that this is M86 Security’s great innovation and the company’s ability to deliver such protection against new and advanced threats is “a tall order, but certainly within the realm of M86’s capability.”

The SC Lab team writes that “innovation is not something that comes from sales or marketing alone. It is comprised of the technology, plus the way the business is conceived.” For its annual look at the industry’s foremost innovators, SC Magazine looked for companies that have “vision, imagination and creative management” along with the ability to make sense of and thrive in a new computing paradigm by delivering viable technology.
