Kaspersky Labs: Pocket Money for IT Security

January 2013 by Kaspersky Lab

How much do companies spend on IT security? Kaspersky Lab discovered the answer to this question in a global survey carried out among companies of all sizes. Small businesses are the most frugal, spending just 27 EUR per employee per year on IT security—approximately the same amount as parents give their children each month as pocket money. Major corporations, on the other hand, invest 110 EUR per employee per annum—more than four times that amount.

IT security is becoming increasingly important for companies—but how is this importance reflected in their spending? Kaspersky Lab discovered the answer to this question by conducting a global survey among companies of all sizes. Small businesses proved to be the most frugal, investing just 27 EUR per employee per year in IT security—as much as the average parents spend on their children’s pocket money. The only difference? The children receive 27 EUR per month1. Medium-sized companies don’t pay much more: Kaspersky Lab discovered that they spend, on average, 38 EUR per employee per year. The figures provided include all relevant IT security expenses, including hardware and software costs and consulting fees.

Major Corporations Spend the Most

There is a large gap between SME expenditure and that of major corporations. Companies surveyed in this bracket spend around 110 EUR per employee per year, making a total of 2.85 million EUR per year in IT security expenditure. Small to medium-sized companies spend around 70,000 EUR per year on IT security, with small businesses spending a total of 7,600 EUR per year.
