Infosecurity Europe 2012 welcomes Q4 buoyant security market report

March 2012 by Infosecurity Europe

With less than six weeks to go before Infosecurity Europe 2012, the organisers of the annual event have welcomed news that the EMEA enterprise network security market topped the $674 million mark last quarter.

David Rowe, CISSP, member of the Infosecurity Europe Advisory Council and Head of Business Services for Reed Exhibitions - the organisers of the show, which is held 24th -26th April in Earls Court, London - said this figure, which represents a 9.0 pc increase year-on-year – and 12.8 pc over the prior (third) quarter - reflects the fact that IT security is now a critical part of business infrastructure.

“As we saw at last year’s event – when seminar speakers were talking about the early days of political hacktivism and distributed-denial-of-service attacks – those attack vectors have now come to fruition. And these issues are undoubtedly what is driving the levels of investment in IT security identified by our colleagues at Canalys,” he said.

“The good news that we draw from this research is that organisations are learning to track these issues - and manage the rising tide of DDoS attacks, as well as the bring-you-own-device trend with employees bring their own iPads and smartphones into the workplace – and hooking them up to the firm’s IT resource,” he added.

The Infosecurity Europe specialist went on to say that this latter trend – which the report notes as is shown by increasing numbers of personal smartphones and tablet computers that are being brought into the workplace by employees – needs to be met by enhanced levels of IT security inside the company network perimeter.

And as the report says, there is now a strong need for more integrated IT security systems, particularly against the backdrop of tougher compliance regulations, which are forcing companies to deploy broader security capabilities.

Rowe says that anecdotal observations in the run-up to the Infosecurity Europe 2012 event next month suggest that the UK’s IT security arena may be even more buoyant than the Canalys figures suggest.

And these observations, he explains, can be seen by the fact that – while the EMEA region’s investments in IT security are up 9.7 pc year-on-year for the area as a whole - the market in Africa and the Middle East is declining.

Drilling down into the report reveal strong growth in Russia and the emerging markets of Central Europe, but these markets, he says, are nowhere near as mature as the UK, where IT managers are investing heavily to better defend their organisation’s digital assets

This assertion is borne out by the report’s observation that a boost in spending in Western Europe was particularly evident, but the prediction that the year ahead will see more aggressive pricing – with discounts and channel promotions, plus markets led by smaller vendors confident they can take share from the larger players – will be music to the ears of any IT security manager, he adds.

“These IT security managers will need to thoroughly research the changing IT security landscape and it’s for this reason that – once again – Infosecurity Europe 2012 will feature an unrivalled security education programme that spans multiple threats, with panel sessions and seminars taking place over all three days of the show,” he said.

“All the signs are that the blistering array of educational sessions, coupled with the great and the good from the Infosecurity industry exhibiting at the event, will make for a three-day show that anyone involve in IT security planning and deployment really needs to attend,” he added.
