ITW Security passport Laminate Solution meet challenges of lower volume document issuance

August 2017 by Marc Jacob

Passport documents by their very nature require the variable data of each holder to be secure and protected from fraudulent activity. It is essential that these pages are adequately protected from tampering and alteration, however the recent proliferation in the number of passport formats has meant that there is a wider than ever need for effective solutions that work across a variety of passport booklets, setting a real challenge for Governments.

From emergency travel documents to diplomatic passports and seafarer’s booklets, the issuance of low volume passport books and their corresponding data page protection present unique cost targets. ITW Security Division has recognised this need and invested in its printed security technology options to deliver effective laminate solutions across multiple formats, and that remove the need for costly origination to provide realistic costings for these low volume projects.

Printed technologies such as OVTek® provide an easily authenticated security feature employing proprietary Fasver® technology to create a printed pattern composed of two separate graphics with colours that swap instantly depending on the angle of view. Similarly, Imaprotek® provides a polychromatic image, derived from a photograph, which is invisible under daylight yet vibrantly visible when exposed to UV light. Also, a new Matte-Shiny™ patented technology which combines matte and shiny patterns in select laminate areas, making it impossible to recompose after an attempted forgery using an inauthentic plastic film.
Al Madina Development from Oman asked ITW Security Division to assist with the Oman Seafarer’s booklet. The brief was for a solution that provided highly secure level one and two features within a realistic unit cost. After receiving the brief ITW Security Division worked with its design department and proposed its Fasprotek® product in a self-adhesive format with a range of level one and two features, including OVTek® and Imaprotek®.

Commenting on the Oman laminate, Shelia Jamal CEO of Al Madina said “ITW have provided the ideal solution for this important project, and despite its low volume, have been able to provide a high security laminate that met our target costs. In addition, the ability to source a self-adhesive version has allowed the complete project cost to be lower as there was no need for lamination equipment”.
ITW Security Division’s work for the supply of high security laminates with Österreichische Staatsdruckerei highlight their flexibility as a trusted partner for both large and small volume projects. “In a world of high speed and high volumes, customers in small countries do not easily find partners that listen to their needs,” commented Claudia Schwendimann Österreichische Staatsdruckerei’s CEO. “ITW Security Division however works with great attention to understand each customer’s individual requirements, regardless of their volume, so even small customers receive a design, which not only reflects a country’s identity, but that is also very beautiful and highly secure”.

“ITW Security Division is unique in its ability to offer a complete laminate range across document types and specifications,” commented Bob Carey, ITW Security Division’s Business Unit Manager. “We are proud to find solutions that meet our customer’s volume and cost requirements and we have the capability to work across both lower volume projects for printed solutions or larger volume opportunities, such as for our HoloPrint technology - no project is too big or small.”
