GCHQ: Cisco Talos commentary
October 2017 by Martin Lee, Technical Lead Security Research, Talos Outreach EMEAR at Cisco
Following the news that GCHQ has recognised cyber-attacks pose as much of a risk to our country as terrorism, the commentary from Martin Lee, Technical Lead Security Research, Talos Outreach EMEAR at Cisco.
“GCHQ recognises that cyber-attacks pose as much of a risk to our country and livelihood as terrorism. Cyber criminals are constantly testing the defences of organisations across the country seeking to gain access to systems. Yet far too often business find themselves poorly defended and poorly prepared when a major attack hits them.
“Organisations need to recognise cyber criminals as their biggest competitor. Cyber crime is undertaken by sophisticated, well resourced, organised groups of criminals. However, it is not inevitable that attacks will succeed. Through partnering with security organisations in both the private and public sectors and being aware of the risks, companies can ensure that they are more than equal to the menace posed by cyber crime.
“Moving cybersecurity to the top of the nation’s to-do list is a necessary step in ensuring citizens, businesses and governments alike are protected from the cybercriminals of tomorrow.”
