Emmanuel Macron phishing attack - Mimecast comment

April 2017 by Steven Malone, director of security product management at email security firm Mimecast

In reaction to the news that Trend Micro has identified French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron’s campaign having been targeted by phishing attacks from what appears to be the same Russian operatives responsible for hacks of the US democratic campaign last year, please find comment below from Mimecast.

Steven Malone, director of security product management at email security firm Mimecast, commented:

“Word-perfect phishing attacks are now increasingly commonplace, impersonating domain names and individuals with personalised precision.

These latest attacks on political campaigns are a timely reminder that all organisations need to review their email security practices. Monitoring for lookalike domains and stamping external emails with warnings are effective countermeasures.”
