Comments from Fujitsu on Wonga data breach

April 2017 by Marc Jacob

Following today’s news payments lender Wonga has suffered a data breach, potentially affecting over a quarter of a million customers, please see below comments from Rob Norris, ?VP Head of Enterprise & Cyber Security EMEIA at Fujitsu in case you are covering the story and looking for additional commentary.

Rob Norris, ?VP Head of Enterprise & Cyber Security EMEIA at Fujitsu
“Cyber-attacks now make a regular occurrence in today’s headlines, with Wonga being the latest to suffer. With data fast becoming the new currency, any organisation that holds information, be it of consumers or businesses is now a target. As the number of these threats continue to increase exponentially, no businesses nor consumer can afford for cyber-security not to be their number one priority. We have seen how data breaches and cyber-attacks do indeed have both reputational and financial ramifications, we just need to look at Yahoo’s deal with Verizon as proof of that.

“With breaches of such a magnitude like this on a daily basis, it’s vital that both consumers and organisations take a proactive approach when it comes to security. Organisations need to think about what data they need to protect and focus on the integration of threat intelligence and other information sources, to provide the context necessary to deal with today’s advanced cyber threats. They also need to be astute as to what third party organisations they work with and ensure they don’t pose a security threat, as hackers will look for back doors into an organisation through suppliers that might not have as tight security precautions.

“We are now in an age where cybercrime and data breaches are inevitable, and so businesses no longer have an excuse to not take their security measures and processes with the utmost seriousness.”
