Blue Coat Rises to Number One in Market Share for WAN Optimization Solutions for Gartner

January 2009 by Marc Jacob

Blue Coat Systems, Inc. announced that it is ranked as the leader of the WAN optimization equipment market according to a new report from Gartner, Inc., the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company. The report, “Market Share: Application Acceleration Equipment, Worldwide, 3Q08,”1 ranks Blue Coat with the leading share of market during the third calendar quarter of 2008. Blue Coat’s market share grew by nearly 19 percent over the prior quarter, making it the fastest growing WAN optimization vendor during the quarter. The worldwide WAN optimization market grew nearly four percent from the previous quarter.

Blue Coat® ProxySG® and PacketShaper® appliances enable visibility and control over what passes across the WAN and through the Internet gateway. Enterprises can accelerate important applications to branch offices using the optimization technologies built into the appliances, including protocol optimization, compression, bandwidth management, object caching and byte caching. In addition, the appliances enable organizations to meter the use of recreational and non-business applications, such as streaming media and movie downloads while also providing protection from malicious content and applications. Companies can use the same appliances to secure and control branch offices that have direct Internet access and apply consistent policies across the distributed enterprise. In addition, the same ProxySG appliances serve as the means to efficiently deliver live or on-demand corporate video to branch offices through use of stream-splitting, pre-positioning of content and local caching.
