VB announces VBSpam anti-spam certification results
Virus Bulletin, the independent security certification body, has
announced that 23 solutions entered into its latest round of
comparative anti-spam testing earned VBSpam certification.
The most impressive results were achieved by OnlyMyEmail,
Mailshell and BitDefender, all of which demonstrated very high
spam catch rates without misclassifying any of the 5,000+
legitimate emails sent during the test period. The performances
of IBM Lotus Protector and Anubis Networks were also impressive.
VB’s Anti-Spam Test Director Martijn Grooten said: "After a
decline at the beginning of this year, spam levels have been
more or less constant for some months now, showing that it
continues to be a significant problem. Spammers also continue to
look for new ways to evade filters and thus it was worrying to
see a drop in some products’ spam catch rate, while others
incorrectly blocked a number of legitimate emails. However,
there were also several products that combined a very good spam
catch rate with few to no false positives; those deserve full
praise."
The VBSpam quadrant plots products’ spam catch rate against
their false positive rate, with the top right-hand corner the
area products should be aiming for (with maximum spam catch rate
and minimum false positive rate). The front-runners in this test
can clearly be seen from their positions on the quadrant at
